bienvenido

ES Whether you are interested in addressing specific problems or exploring patterns in your life, my goal is to help you live a healthier and happier life that’s in line with your values. As a clinical psychologist, I provide evidence-based treatments in a collaborative and compassionate environment. My areas of specialty include mood and anxiety disorders, trauma (e.g. sexual, physical, and verbal abuse; torture), substance use, adjustments and life transitions related to immigration and other major life events. I have extensive experience working with diverse populations (e.g. ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, gender, socio-economic status, immigration status).

While my treatment approach is cognitive behavioral, when appropriate, I incorporate humanistic, psychodynamic, and mindfulness-based approaches, and experiential techniques to support client self-discovery. I have specialized training in psychotherapy for PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other specific concerns. I provide psychotherapy to individuals, couples and families.

I take great pride and feel privileged to provide psychotherapy bilingually in Spanish. Lastly, I also specialize in psychological evaluations for immigration cases often used in asylum, extreme hardship, spousal abuse, and removal conditions of inadmissibility. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like more information, via email or at (206) 504-3944 x316.

WHAT SESSIONS LOOK LIKE

ES During our initial sessions, we will work to identify what issues will be important to address during our work together. I view psychotherapy as a collaborative journey in which we will work side by side in an open and honest environment. My goal is to nurture and encourage flexibility as new themes emerge and redirect our focus if is appropriate and necessary.

In our sessions, I take on a holistic approach where I focus on many aspects of your experiences such as your thoughts, emotions, beliefs, memories, childhood experiences, your family make up, underlying bodily experiences, relationship patterns, life goals and aspirations. In our work together, we will also examine the role of the broader system (e.g. family, friends, work/school environment), in particular how it informs who you are.

COUPLES AND FAMILY PSYCHOTHERAPY

ES Couples seek therapy for a variety reasons and at different stages in their relationships My goal is to increase compassion and understanding, of one self and one another. I aim to foster an open, respectful, and honest dialogue in order to increase awareness and expressions of emotions, values, beliefs, and needs.

Whether you are interested in addressed past or more recent issues, therapy is an opportunity to deepen your love and commitment to each other. During our initial sessions I will focus on understanding what has motivated you to seek therapy and what you feel are the issues that you would like address in our work together. I will also use this time to get know you individually and as a couple.

I will also spend time getting to know your relationship history, how you met, how your relationship has developed, and what challenges you have and continue to face. We will also devote our time discussing your hopes and goals for therapy.

Couples often find themselves stuck in negative patterns of interaction. Couples therapy can be be useful in identifying, clarifying, and shifting those patterns. Through this process underlying themes often emerge and as such a deepened understanding and connection between couples. Couples therapy is also a space in which to experiment with new relationship and communication skills. It is my hope that …..

PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS

ES I provide psychological evaluations for immigration cases often used in: asylum, extreme hardship, spousal abuse, removal of conditions.

I conduct evaluations in my office, at the Northwest Detention Center, or other local organizations/agency if space permits.

FAMILY THERAPY

ES Families come in many shapes and sizes as does family therapy. In my work with families I draw from the Family Systems Therapy theory. Family systems views the family as a unit and explores how an individual’s behavior is informed by and is inseparable from the functioning of his and her family origin. As such, in therapy we will explore the structure and behavior of the broader relationship system that informs who you are as in individual. Therapy may include all family members or just those who are able to participate.

Families can often find themselves in stuck in patterns of negative interactions. Family therapy can be useful in identifying and clarifying these patterns. It can also facilitate a shift to healthier and constructive patterns of interacting. As families explore how they interact with one another and what factors maintain the negative patterns, underlying themes are likely to emerge. Recognizing and understanding these themes can deepen family connections. My hope is to help families improve communication and resolve conflicts through new relationship and communication skills.

acerca de

ES I received training in the scientist-practitioner model of psychology that aims to deliver psychological assessment and interventions in accordance with scientifically based, empirically supported protocols. I strive to access and integrate scientific findings in my work with you. Overall, my training has been in empirically supported treatments including cognitive behavioral treatments (CBT), which is most closely aligned with the scientist-practitioner model. I explore how our beliefs and our behaviors contribute to our emotional experiences and overall functioning. This model also emphasizes assessment, conceptualization, and monitoring of the concerns you wish to explore in therapy.

Additionally, I also incorporate other approaches, including humanistic, psychodynamic, and mindfulness-based approaches in my practice. Furthermore, I integrate a multicultural and social justice perspective throughout my work. When appropriate, I take into account the impact of racism, classism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of discrimination that may have on your health and wellbeing. Similarly, we may also explore the impact that privilege and oppression may have on our therapeutic relationship.
